Told You So...

Allow me a moment to gloat, if you would. It’s not often that I nail a story on the head as precisely as I did last night.

You see, at about 6PM yesterday, when all the pundits and experts were saying that the Red Sox had landed the rights to negotiate with Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, they all had differing opinions on the cost of those negotiating rights.

Buster Olney had reported a final cost of $38-$45 Million late last week.

Hall of Fame reporter Peter Gammons had been more precise, saying the highest bid was at $42 Million.

Orestes Destrade reported to ESPN that the amount was “well in excess of $50M”.

But yours truly, with no inside sources, no friends living in Japan (well, one, but I haven’t seen or talked to him in about five years), no way of knowing just how the intricate inner workings of Major League Baseball’s posting process with Japanese Baseball function. All I had to work with was my brain, my laptop, and my fingers typing furiously on my keyboard. I pegged the final cost of posting for Matsuzaka at $51 Million.

At 8PM tonight, Major League Baseball announced that the Boston Red Sox had won the negotiating rights to Daisuke Matsuzaka with a final bid of… $51.1 Million.

Domo. Domo Arigato.

Sometimes, I wonder why I don’t have a career in this stuff yet.

Since it’s 11PM right now, and I’m fairly exhausted after three hours of celebrating by own dumb luck and ridiculous abilities, I’m going to bed. I’ll post up my Week 11 Ranks tomorrow morning, probably by noon. Check back then for more.

As for now, enjoy the Matsuzaka Mania. For the next thirty days, at least, he’s ours.

Lata.
