Quick Thoughts - Week 14
Quick thoughts as I careen towards another sub-.500 week of football picks…
- I’m pretty sure I totally forgot to pick the Chargers/Bucs game when I posted last Thursday. Oops. Um, let’s just say that I probably would have taken the Chargers (-5), so let’s go ahead and count that in the final standings. Still, the best I can hope for is a 7-9 week.
- I think that from now on, I’m going to write my synopsis of a game first, then make my pick. Here’s what I wrote for yesterday’s Vikings/Seahawks: “I have no idea here. Neither one of these teams really instills confidence in today’s bettor. My prediction? Seventeen lead-changes, twelve turnovers, and a final score of a 38-38. Both teams are that bad right now. My head hurts.” Yet I still took Minnesota (-6.5) rather than the underdog in a game I knew would be close. Why? Because I’m an idiot.
- I have finally made a decision about my favorite NFL sportscasters. I know, riveting stuff here. Anyway, I have to admit that given the choice between Dan Dierdorf and John Madden, I’m probably taking Dierdorf, and then hanging myself. He just brings more to the telecast. Although if you want comedy, I don’t think anyone is even close to Madden’s level…
- How many people do you think got burned trying to ride the Pats/Colts/Eagles teasers and 3-way parlays this week? This is why they keep building casinos in Vegas people. Because even those three offenses couldn’t win by 30+ combined every week. (Yes, I picked all three to cover… Shut up.)
- I should know better than to ever try and make sense of the Arizona Cardinals. Seriously. I don’t think there’s a more screwed up franchise in pro football right now. At least the 49ers have their history to reflect on.
- Let’s see, hmm… Week 14 - uh, yep. We’re right on schedule for the Mike Tice firing rumors to begin…
- I’m very angry at the Jets right now (not that I’m ever not angry with the Jets). All they had to do was beat a banged up team riding a wave of momentum, and they couldn’t do it. Hell, Jerome Bettis was the Steelers best QB yesterday – how did they win the game?
- A friend of mine from Pittsburgh IM’ed me yesterday during the Steelers/Jets game to berate me for openly cheering for the Jets to beat his beloved Steelers. My away message read “J-E-T-S Jets Jets JETS! Let’s go Gang Green!” He obviously read it and then decided he was opposed to it. He informed me that although the Pats were playing the Bengals, he wouldn’t cheer for Cincy because they are Pittsburgh’s AFC North rivals, so therefore I should never cheer for the Jets because they are New England’s AFC East rivals. Fair enough – I will never cheer for the Jets again. (I think it’s safe to say that would have happened anyway.)
- Who do you think had the worse day – Chris Chandler (16/29, 243yds, TD, 6 INT) or Eli Manning (4/18, 27yds, 2INT, 0.0QB rating, benched for Kurt Warner)? My money is on Manning – Chandler wasn’t expected to do much. Eli has the weight of the world on his back.
- Troy Brown is now tied for the New England team lead with 3 interceptions on the season. Raise your hand if you criticized Bill Belichick for letting him practice on defense back in training camp… (No, my hand is down.)
- The Miami/New England game next week scares the bejesus out of me. You’ve got a team with nothing to lose, and a team that just lost it offensive coordinator. It’s a division game, which is always a battle. And I’m expecting the line to be in the 8-13 point range again. I’m saving that pick for last next week.
- And finally, for the remainder of the football season I will have a new posting schedule. Mondays will be spent talking about Sunday’s games, like this post has. Tuesday/Wednesday will be spent talking about Monday Night Football and/or the topic of the week. Thursday/Friday will be my picks posting only. I’m sure you’re just as tired of reading 3,000-7,000 words all at once as I am of typing that much. This will help break up the monotony a bit, and give you all a way to kill twenty minutes three times a week rather than just an hour once a week.
Oh, one last thing. My “Quote of the Week(end)”
From NFL referee Jeff Triplett, during an official review in the Pats/Bengals game Sunday:
“After reviewing the play, the call stands – it is a catch. The receiver caught the ball and drug both feet inbounds before his other foot came down out of bounds…”
What’s funny to me is not the butchery of the English Language (“drug both feet”), but the fact that the referee is announcing that the receiver (in this case, David Patten) has three feet. And everyone wonders why the Patriots seem to have an advantage? Well, wide-receivers having three feet doesn’t hurt…
Read the quote again, if you didn’t catch it the first time.
